VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION AND BPPV

Did you know dizziness can be
treated by a physiotherapist? In most cases dizziness is caused by a condition called BPPV can be treated in as little as one session!

What is BPPV?

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a common inner ear disorder that causes episodes of vertigoó a false sense of spinning or movementó triggered by changes in head position. It occurs when tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and move into one of the semicircular canals. There is no known cause of BPPV but aging, prolonged bed rest, certain ear diseases and head injuries put you at a higher risk of developing BPPV.

Symptoms of BPPV

Intense Dizziness: Often described as a spinning sensation.

Nausea: May accompany the dizziness.

Balance Issues: Decreased balance and increased risk of falls.

Nystagmus: Involuntary eye movements.

BPPV can be diagnosed and treated by your physiotherapist.

BPPV is treated by a series of Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers: Techniques (like the Epley maneuver) to move the dislodged crystals back to their original location.

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy can also treat a wide variety of issues caused by the inner ear that cause dizziness and balance deficits.

Vestibular Rehabilitation helps in the treatment of:

- BPPV

- Dizziness coming from the neck

- Post-concussion syndrome

- Vestibular migraines

- Meniereís disease

- Vestibular Schwannoma
